Day 1:

Arrive in Salisbury, well served by rail links, for an overnight stay and a chance to explore the city, especially its magnificent cathedral with towering spire, ancient clock and a copy of The Magna Carta.

Day 2:

A 10 mile walk, leaving Salisbury by way of the water meadows, made famous by Constable’s painting, to pass the racecourse and then climb up onto chalk downs, with far reaching views. Your bed for the night will be in one of the villages down in the river valley.

Day 3:

After a hearty breakfast, your 10 mile walk today is filled with history. Initially you climb back up onto the ridge and along a Roman road. Next you follow Bockerly Dyke, an iron/bronze age defensive ditch and mound that stretches over 3 miles and where its scale is difficult to appreciate. Pentridge Hill provides an extensive viewpoint before you arrive at the village of Cranborne for an overnight stop in a lovely country inn.

Day 4:

After passing an Elizabethan Manor, you walk through unpopulated Dorset countryside with ancient burial mounds in view. Pretty villages provide a choice of lunch stops before you arrive in beautiful Tollard Royal, the centre of Cranborne Chase and the past hunting ground of Kings. A special country inn will look after you for the night. 10 miles.

Day 5:

A day of almost 13 miles starts with a stroll up a lovely hidden valley before the steep climb up to Win Green, a fantastic view point, and the highest point in Wiltshire. Another village inn, then another climb up to White Sheet Hill before arriving in the quaint hill top town of Shaftesbury by way of tiny lanes and villages.

Day 6:

You leave Shaftesbury by going down the iconic Gold Hill and along more narrow country lanes. A steep ascent up to Melbury Hill, again with long distance views, is followed by passing a small private airfield at Compton Abbas and its highly recommended cafe. Next it is the picture postcard village of Ashmore, the highest village in Dorset. Woodland walking leads you to Tarrant Monkton, with it’s country inn for your night and some good food in their restaurant. 14 miles.

Day 7:

Your final day is some 10 miles with a crossing of uninhabited countryside and an iron age hill fort. The walk passes the National Trust’s Kingston Lacey House before following the River Stour into Wimborne Minster for your final night. The Minster in the centre of the town is well known for its quarterjacks that sound bells on each quarter of the hour.

Day 8:

Depart from Wimborne Minster making use of good transport links
