Amazonia Expeditions

Since 1981, we have been delivering spectacular adventures into the Amazon Jungle as the area’s leading ecotourism operator. Join us in the Tahuayo Reserve to experience the most biodiverse region yet studied. Your highly trained private guide and customized itinerary will deliver an unforgettable experience.   Most important for you to consider, we have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, with not one complaint ever filed by one of our guests in over 30 years. We are also rated #1 in the western Amazon by National Geographic and #1 in the Amazon and all of Peru by Trip Advisor (#2 in all of South America), among many other honors. The #1 rating in National Geographic is based on conservation ethics while Trip Advisor rates client satisfaction, but there are many other considerations to choose our company, which are described in more detail on our website. Here is just a short list for you to consider: Amazonia is the only company with access to the 440,000 hectare (1 million acre) ACRCTT conservation area, described by biologists as having the greatest biodiversity yet documented in the Amazon basin. We are especially rich in Monkeys (16 species), birds (over 600 species) and other species such as 2 species of freshwater dolphins. The acidic water ecosystems of the Tahuayo River basin do not have the mosquito species Anopheles darlingi or Aedes aegypti, thus there is no zika, malaria or yellow fever; no malaria prophylaxis is necessary for the trip, unlike Iquitos trips/lodges that pass through Nauta, now considered the worst malaria hot zone in all of Peru or Puerto Maldonado in the south, a hotspot for yellow fever as well as malaria. You will be assigned a private guide who will customize your itinerary to your needs and interests; Amazonia’s guides have the best skills and highest training standards of any company in the Amazon. All guides are certified in wilderness first aid. We are the only Iquitos based company with a canopy exploration complex The Canopy Experience that includes 5 canopy platforms, 3 ziplines and a walkway, all more than 30 meters above the forest floor. Our community support program has built the finest rural health clinic in the Amazon and pays for staff, equipment and supplies. We are currently building a high school for the communities of the upper Tahuayo River. With this fine clinic we have close access to medical care should the need arise We have an active program of scientific research and affiliation with leading universities and other institutions. There is satellite based wifi and internet access in both lodges, with electricity via solar power.

Days 2-4
*From the main lodge
Guided excursions in and around the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve. Every day your guide will discuss a selection of activities that you can choose to do. There is no extra cost for private guide or customizing your itinerary to your needs and interests.
The main lodge has the greater variety of excursions of our two lodges. The following is but a sample list:
The Canopy Experience
Hike into varzea forest behind lodge; highly probable to see pygmy marmosets, owl monkeys, yellow-crowned brush tailed rats, wire-tailed manakins. Also possible to see black tamarins, saddle-backed tamarins, trogons.
Hike to Lake Tapaje, explore by canoe.
Canoe into tahuampa forest (flooded forest), canoe past giant ficus trees, see hoatzin birds, horned screamers, look for caiman on observation platform.
Motorboat to terra firme forest, hike into frog valley. See beautiful little poison dart frogs, which were studied by scientists from Uppsala University (Sweden). See bat cavity (huge tree whose center has rotted out); braver people can crawl through bat cavity.
Motorboat to Lake Charo to see pink dolphins, swimming. En route look for squirrel monkeys, sloths, raptors.
Fish for piranha.
Visit native village of El Chino. Visit artisania cooperative. Visit with shaman (subject to his availability). Visit farm. Visit school.

Days 5-7
*To the Amazon Research Center lodge, ARC
The Research Center is more remote. On the boat ride to the Research Center we stop to see bats, sloths, monkeys, raptors, toucans.
We have over 100 km of hiking trails from the research center, most of the trails are laid out in a grid to facilitate the scientific collection of population data. The trails go through several ecosystems, including bajial, high and low restinga, palm swamp and terra firme. We can see many different species of monkeys, including brown and white capuchins, saki monkeys, titi monkeys, squirrel monkeys, pygmy marmosets, moustached tamarins, saddle-backed tamarins, and sometimes uakaris, as well as giant tayra weasels and tamandua anteaters. Data collected from camera traps also reveal a high density of jaguar live here but these are rarely seen.
Boating the various lakes and rivers from the research center we often see caiman as well as the highly endangered giant river otters.
Hiking to Lake Yarina (full day) we can see hoatzins on their nests, blue and yellow macaws and caiman.

Preparation suggestions
Documents
Please bring two copies of your passport picture page for help in reconfirming flights and as entrance requirement for the reserve. No visa is required. No vaccination certificate is required. In our 37 years working in this region we have not yet had a traveler become sick with a tropical disease. The acidic ecosystems do not have Anopheles darlingi nor Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the only 2 species of disease carrying mosquitoes in Peru. Please contact us if you want for more details.

Clothes for the jungle
Long and short pants; long sleeved shirts and tee shirts; rain gear; hat with brim; swim suit; comfortable footwear and flip flops. We have jungle rubber boots in various sizes available for you (it is important to use our boots to help prevent the spread of amphibian chytridiomycosis disease, spread from microscopic soil particles from foreign forests). Bring high socks to wear in the boots. Canoe enthusiasts like reef walkers or water moccasins. Daytime high temperatures are 80-88 F

Other things to bring
Sun block (you are close to the equator where there is less atmospheric protection from UV); insect repellent; canteen or water bottle; binoculars; flashlight with spare batteries; personal first aid kit; personal toiletries; small battery operated fan; daypack or small backpack. We provide three meals a day but if you like to snack between meals bring some snacks in zip lock bags.

Money
Needed for optional purchases such as souvenirs. US currency is good for all of that, but make sure your bills are in virtually new or mint condition.

Please forward any questions, dietary requests, etc.
